Drakou Street
Drakou Street runs from Sygrou Fix metro up to the historic Filopapou Hill in the centre of Athens just south of the Acropolis.
It is a pedestrian street which forms the heart of the popular city centre neighbourhood of Koukaki. The metro and good transport links have made it successful in the past, but the environment is becoming a little tired, planting is overgrown, and the small independent cafes and shops are suffering from the effects of the economic crisis and competition from Malls and chains.
A community workshop carried out with the help of Kids and Family explored ways of making people want to come into the street more often and stay for longer, which is the secret of economic regeneration.
We have undertaken a survey of the street and are preparing proposals for the City to revitalise the area through a programme of environmental improvements which will create more useable public spaces. This project is envisaged as a pilot which could be rolled out throughout the small urban neighbourhoods of the city.
