Turangi Township, New Zealand
The town of Turangi was built by the Ministry of Works in the 1950s to house workers during the construction of the hydroelectric projects on Mount Ruapehu and sits on State Highway 1 equidistant between Auckland and Wellington. With the completion of the construction projects much of the working population left and the town became a refuelling point on the main road and a centre for skiing, fishing and geothermal recreations.
Environmental masterplan for the town centre to attract passing visitors and to regenerate the economy, for The Isthmus Group.
Detailed design and contract administration for first phase of works including services, lighting, paving, street furniture, glass canopies by subconsultant, architect Rewi Thompson, and artwork by artists from the local Iwi, or Maori community.
